Who Owns AAMI Life Insurance, and Is It Legit?

Two names sit on one policy, and that confuses people. Let us untangle them.

AAMI is a well-known Australian brand that has been part of the Suncorp Group since 2007. Suncorp is famous for car, home and other everyday insurance. Life insurance is a different trade with different rules and different maths, so a specialist handles it.

That specialist is TAL Life Limited, part of the TAL Dai-ichi Life Australia group. TAL is not part of the Suncorp Group. It simply uses the AAMI brand under licence. Think of a bakery selling loaves under a supermarket’s label. The supermarket’s name is on the bag, but the baker made the bread. If you are searching for AAMI Life Insurance Australia, you are really looking at TAL’s product wearing an AAMI badge.

TAL Direct sells the policy by phone and online, and claims are paid from TAL Life’s own statutory fund. Finder also notes that TAL has more than 150 years of experience [Verify: TAL’s own history page].

    So, is it legit?

Yes. Here is why we say that:

    • The insurer holds an Australian Financial Services Licence.
    • The product follows the Life Insurance Code of Practice.
    • If the insurer’s own complaints team does not fix your problem, you can go to AFCA, a free independent complaints body.
    • You get a 30-day money-back window after you buy.
    • The AAMI Life Insurance PDS is public, and it sets out the rules in writing.

What Does AAMI Life Insurance Cover?

Quick heads-up. If you came looking for hospital tiers and extras, that is health insurance, and this product does not include it. Health insurance pays hospitals and dentists. AAMI Life Insurance pays you or your family cash. Different tool, different job.

Comprehensive Life Cover (the main policy)

    Feature What you get
Payout A lump sum up to $1,500,000 per person for death or terminal illness
Terminal illness Two doctors certify you will not survive more than 12 months
Advance payment Up to $10,000 early, once a death claim is approved, for urgent costs
Cover ends At the policy anniversary after your 99th birthday
Inflation protection Cover rises each year by CPI or 5%, whichever is greater, up to the policy anniversary after age 70 (maximum $2,500,000)
Two people on one policy Yes, and each person can pick a different amount
Medical exam Not required for ages 18 to 65, though health questions still apply

    The Life Events feature

Life changes fast. You get married, have a baby, or sign a mortgage. This feature lets you raise your cover without new health checks. The rules:

    • You can use it once every 12 months.
    • Each increase is the lesser of $100,000 or 20% of your cover.
    • Total increases cannot pass 100% of your original amount.
    • You must apply within 90 days of the event and before your 60th birthday.
    • Qualifying events include marriage, a new baby or adoption, a new mortgage, the death of an immediate family member, and your child starting school.

Optional Illness Covers (ages 18 to 55)

You can add Major Illness Cover, Cancer Cover, or both. Combined, they can reach the lesser of $250,000 or your life cover amount. Here is the part many people miss: a payout comes out of your life cover.

Example from the PDS: you hold $1,000,000 of life cover plus $100,000 of Major Illness Cover. You suffer a covered condition and receive $100,000. Your life cover drops to $900,000. Your family still gets the rest later, but the total pot is not bigger.

These optional covers stop at the policy anniversary after your 65th birthday.

Major Illness Cover includes cancer that meets set criteria, heart attack (full or partial payment), stroke with new nerve damage, bypass surgery, paralysis, major organ transplant, major organ failure, permanent major physical impairment, severe burns and major head trauma. Each one has strict definitions, so check the AAMI Life Insurance PDS pages on insured conditions before you buy.

    Income Protection

Income protection pays a regular amount if illness or injury stops you working. Per AAMI’s website, it works like this:

    • Cover up to 75% of your income, up to $10,000 a month.
    • You choose a claim waiting period and a benefit period.
    • Premiums are usually tax deductible [Verify with a tax adviser].
    • You pay no premium for up to 3 months while receiving benefits.
    • Inflation protection is included.

    What is not included

    • Total and permanent disability cover. Finder points out that AAMI Life does not include it.
    • Standalone trauma cover. The illness covers are attached to your life cover.
    • Hospital, dental or any other health cover.

How Much Does AAMI Life Insurance Cost in 2026?

Honest answer: it depends on you. AAMI does not publish a price table, and anyone quoting you a flat figure is guessing. The PDS says your price depends on the type and amount of cover, your age and sex, whether you smoke, how long you have held the policy, and how often you pay. Your job, health, income and hobbies can matter too.

    The stepped premium reality

Your premium is worked out by your age at each policy anniversary. That means it generally rises every year, and the rises get bigger as you get older. Inflation protection also lifts your cover, which lifts your premium. It is like a gym membership that gets pricier every birthday, except the gym also protects your family.

    Discounts you can actually use

Discount What you get The catch
Existing AAMI customer 5% off for the life of the policy You need another AAMI-branded policy, like car or home
Family (two lives) 5% off the youngest person’s life cover Not on optional illness covers
Pay annually 12 months of cover for the price of 11, about an 8% saving You pay up front
$100 off first year Spread evenly across first-year payments New customers, bought between 27 August 2026 and 24 February 2027, keep the policy 12 months unless you pay annually; may be withdrawn
Higher cover amounts The PDS says discounts apply Amounts not published

Quick maths, purely as an example: if your premium were $50 a month, a 5% discount saves $2.50 a month, and paying annually saves about one month’s premium a year. Small wins add up.

How to get an AAMI Life Insurance Quote

Getting an AAMI Life Insurance Quote takes three steps:

    1. Use the calculator on the AAMI site to estimate how much cover you need. A common rule of thumb (not an AAMI rule) is debts, plus several years of family living costs, plus future costs like school, minus savings and any cover you already have.
    2. Answer the short questions about income, health and lifestyle online or by phone.
    3. Review the quote. The PDS warns that the price can change once the full assessment is finished.

    Three price watch-points

    • Premium rates are not guaranteed. The insurer can change rates for the whole group of customers with at least 30 days’ notice.
    • There are no cancellation fees.
    • Life cover premiums are generally not tax deductible, and they do not attract GST.

Waiting Periods and Exclusions in Plain English

This is the fine print people skip and then regret. Here it is, with the jargon removed.

    Rule What it means
90-day qualifying period (illness covers) No payout for cancer, heart attack, stroke or bypass surgery if it happened, was diagnosed, or showed signs in the first 90 days. This restarts for increases, added lives and reinstated cover
13-month rule No life cover payout for intentional self-injury or suicide within 13 months of the start date or of an increase (for the increased part only)
“Do Not Travel” rule No payout if the claim is caused by being in a country under an Australian “Do Not Travel” warning that was already in force before you left and is still active during your stay
Special terms Personal exclusions listed on your policy schedule, agreed before the policy starts
Honesty duty You must take reasonable care to answer questions truthfully. Mistakes can lead to a cut payout or a cancelled policy
Pre-existing illness An illness must first appear after your cover starts

The 13-month rule is a sensitive topic. If it touches your life personally, please talk to someone you trust or a health professional.

    Exclusions inside the illness covers

Each insured condition has its own “what’s not covered” list. A few examples from the PDS:

    • Early-stage or non-invasive cancers are mostly excluded. Only listed examples count, such as certain breast and testicular cancers, and skin melanomas that meet set thickness or spread rules.
    • Most non-melanoma skin cancers are excluded unless they have spread to bone, lymph nodes or distant organs.
    • A mini-stroke (transient ischaemic attack) is not a covered stroke.
    • Some heart attack, paralysis, organ and burns claims can be refused if alcohol or non-prescribed drugs contributed.

What if I miss a payment?

You get 30 days from the due date. If it is still unpaid, the insurer sends a notice giving at least 28 more days before cancelling. A missed first payment means the policy is treated as if it never began.

AAMI Life Insurance Review: The Good and the Not-So-Good

An honest AAMI Life Insurance Review has to show both sides. We did not copy individual customer comments, because we could not verify them. Check independent review sites and read several before you decide.

    What works well

    • Speed and simplicity. The PDS promises a quick decision with no medical tests, and Finder says a blood or medical test may not be required.
    • Long cover. Life cover can run until age 99.
    • Life Events. You can raise cover after big moments without new health checks.
    • Advance payment. Up to $10,000 early helps with urgent costs.
    • Discounts. Up to 5% for existing customers and families, and one free month if you pay annually.
    • Awards claimed on AAMI’s site. AAMI lists Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand wins for life insurance, and a 2026 Finder award for Most Loved Life Insurance (Direct). These are AAMI’s own claims [Verify with the award bodies].

    What could frustrate you

    • No total and permanent disability cover. For some workers, that is a big gap.
    • Illness payouts shrink your life cover. The optional cover is not extra money on top.
    • Rising premiums. Age-based pricing and rate changes can sting over the years.
    • Price comparison. Finder’s 2023 data showed other providers were often cheaper [Verify with a current quote comparison].
    • Age limits. Applications close at 65, and illness covers at 55.
    • No cash value. Like car insurance, it is not a savings plan.
    • Mixed contact details. The PDS and the website list different phone numbers (more on that below).

AAMI Life Insurance Login: How to Access Your Policy Safely

Searches for AAMI Life Insurance Login are common, so here is the calm version. AAMI says existing customers can, depending on policy type, check policy details, make payments and lodge claims online at any hour. The life insurance page has shortcuts for “Make a payment”, “Policy documents” and “Make a claim”. Button names can change, so confirm on the official AAMI site [Verify].

    Safe login steps:

    1. Type the official AAMI website address yourself, or use the AAMI app from your phone’s official store.
    2. Use the customer shortcuts on the life insurance page.
    3. Keep your policy number and the email address on your policy handy.
    4. If you cannot sign in, call the existing customers line listed below.

Scam safety: The PDS says the insurer emails documents to the address you gave. It also lists caller numbers: 02 9081 7002 for existing customers and 02 8299 8489 for new enquiries. If a caller asks for bank details from a different number, hang up and call back on a number from the official website. Never share a password by email. A smooth AAMI Life Insurance Login process is nice, but staying safe matters more.

AAMI Life Insurance Contact Details and How to Make a Claim

Here is the AAMI Life Insurance Contact information from the AAMI website (September 2026).

    Purpose Phone Hours
    Quotes and sales 1300 407 322 Mon to Thu 8am to 7:30pm, Fri 8am to 6pm, Sat 9am to 4pm (AEST/AEDT)
    Existing customers 1300 407 322 Mon to Fri 8am to 6pm (AEST)

Post: AAMI Life Customer Service, GPO Box 68, Sydney NSW 2001.

Email (from the PDS): customerservice@aamilifeinsurance.com.au for general help, and claims@aamilifeinsurance.com.au for claims.

Heads-up on mismatched numbers: the July 2025 PDS lists 13 22 44 for general contact, complaints and privacy, and 1300 450 322 for claims. The website page is newer, so start there, and [Verify] any number before you call.

    How a claim works

    1. Call as soon as you can. Delays can slow things down.
    2. The claims team gives you a list of what they need.
    3. You send a claim form, certified proof of age, and ID for the policy owner. Illness claims also need medical proof.
    4. The insurer may ask for medical records or extra tests, and it pays for extra requirements it asks for beyond the basics.
    5. On an approved death claim, an advance of up to $10,000 can be paid while the rest is finalised.

    If you are unhappy

Contact the insurer first. They aim to resolve complaints within 30 days. If you are still stuck, contact AFCA on 1800 931 678. That service is free.

How to Cancel or Switch AAMI Life Insurance

Changing your mind is allowed. Here is how it works.

Step 1: Check the cooling-off window. Cancel within 30 days of your start date, and if you have not made a claim, you get your premiums back.

Step 2: Cancelling later. After 30 days you can cancel any time. Cancellation takes effect right away, so your cover stops immediately. There are no cancellation fees. If you paid annually, you get the unused part back. Otherwise, there is no refund.

Step 3: Call to cancel. Use the existing customer number above. If you pay by direct debit, changes need at least 2 business days’ notice before your next payment.

Step 4: Switching? Order matters. As a general rule, get the new policy approved before you cancel the old one. Why? Cancelling ends your cover at once, and a new insurer checks your health afresh. If your health has changed, you could be declined or offered worse terms. A new policy also has its own waiting periods and 13-month rule.

Step 5: Think twice about timing. If you cancel in year one, you lose any unused part of the $100 discount.

Cost problem, not a cover problem? You can lower your cover amount to lower your premium, and hardship support exists [Verify with TAL].

    Conclusion: The Key Takeaways

    • AAMI Life Insurance is real and regulated. AAMI is the brand, TAL Life is the insurer.
    • It offers up to $1.5 million of life cover, optional illness cover up to $250,000, and separate income protection.
    • There is no total and permanent disability cover.
    • Prices are personal, premiums step up with age, and the current offer is $100 off the first year.
    • Read the PDS, especially the 90-day period, the 13-month rule and the special terms.
    • Compare at least three quotes, and use the 30-day cooling-off window if you change your mind.
